Museums and sights
It seems that people have lived a good life in Østfold at all times. The district around us has plenty of monuments and museums bearing witness of a happy people in beautiful surroundings.
Sarpsborg: The city is proud of
Borgarsyssel Museum. Here you'll find city history and Norwegian history dating back to the early viking-age.
Hafslund Hovedgård is worth a visit. The old buildings are well taken care of. This is art history, industrial history and architecture in one. If you're lucky, you'll meet the ghost of the main buildings strict head house parlourmaid Maren Juul. Rumour has it that Vidkun Quisling was sleeping over during world war II. He is said to have had a not particulary funny encounter with the old ghost, and never wanted to go back to Sarpsborg. (He was not missed).
Borregaard Hovedgård is also available on appointment, but is not a museum to the same degree as Hafslund Hovedgård. Rather, this is an administrative building for Borregaard industries.
